When we remember the famous actresses of Bollywood, it is hard to give this name a miss. An actress known for the versatility of her roles, Nutan has contributed significantly to the industry.
Born on 4th June 1936, Nutan transcended from the conventional school of acting and delivered 70 Hindi films in a career span of over four decades.
She belonged to a family who had their roots deep in the industry. Her father, Kumarsen Samarth, was a director, her mother, Shobhana, along with her sister, Tanuja, were actresses. Yet she had to work hard to taste the flavour of success.
Though she started her career at the age of 13 by essaying the role of a child artist in her debut movie ‘Hamari Beti’ directed by K Asif, she got critical appreciation for her acting skills after completing her studies from La Chanteine, Switzerland.
Former Miss India, Nutan shot to stardom for her landmark role in the movie ‘Seema’ (1955). With this, she started to share screen space with the big names from the industry such as Dev Anand, Sunil Dutt and Raj Kapoor in movies like ‘Paying Guest’ (1957), ‘Delhi Ka Thug’ (1958), and ‘Anadi’ (1959) respectively.
She was famous for her unconventional roles which demanded her to be bold on screen. Given the time of 1950’s, she posed in a bikini for the movie ‘ Delhi Ke Thug’ and became inspiration for actresses like Silk Smita.
While climbing the ladder of success, Nutan tied the knot with naval Lieutenant-Commander Rajnish Behl in 1959 and soon had a son Mohnish Be. Today he is a famous actor. But her marriage never acted as a hindrance in her career and she won 5 Filmfare awards for Best Actress and one for Outstanding Performance.
She delivered hits like ‘Bandini’, ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’, ‘Saraswatichandra’ among others and garnered a huge following. Clad in a white saree or a skirt, dancing to the tunes of ‘Chod do aanchal, zamana kya kahega’ or ‘M-A-D mad, mad mane paagal’, the audience has loved and accepted her in all avatars .
While her life was a full roller coaster ride, her end was painful. She succumbed to the battle against cancer on 21st February 1991.
